A Conversation about the Participation of Young People in Democracy: Time to Act?
, - Brüssel, Belgien
European Youth Forum and International IDEA
The event will discuss how to get young people engaged and involved in democracy.
For a fully inclusive and representative democracy, young people must participate in it and be properly represented by it. And so why aren’t young people participating in traditional democratic processes, such as elections, in larger numbers, and why are they not properly represented? This event will aim to explore this issue and look for innovative answers to solving this problem.
The young generation of today is the first ever generation of truly global citizens, connected to each other all over the world and able to exchange ideas and work together like never before. For democracy to evolve, political parties need to put young people at the core of their business.
During the conversation, we’ll also discuss the following questions:
- Why are young people excluded from the traditional political processes?
- What could be done to get young people interested in politics again and to bring them back into the mainstream political discourse?
- How do we address the multiple challenges of high unemployment, risk of poverty, demographic change, low educational attainment rates and low turnout of young people in elections?
